Start the Day

Start the Day With a Healthy Morning Routine

A positive morning can establish the rhythm for the rest of a child’s day. Whenever possible, allow enough time for children to wake up, get dressed, complete basic hygiene, and eat breakfast without feeling unnecessarily rushed.

Parents can encourage independence by giving children responsibilities appropriate for their age. A younger child might place pajamas in a hamper or carry a cup to the kitchen. As children grow, they can take on additional tasks such as selecting clothes, packing part of their school bag, or checking that they have what they need for the day.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is repetition. Small responsibilities practiced regularly can eventually become natural habits.
