Receptive Language

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition: Receptive language refers to a child’s developing ability to understand communication received from other people, including words, sentences, questions, directions, gestures, and meaning conveyed in context.

Receptive language is distinct from expressive language, which concerns communicating ideas and needs to others.

Why Receptive Language Matters in Childcare

Understanding language helps children participate in conversations, routines, stories, play, directions, and learning activities.

Providers can support comprehension by speaking clearly, pairing language with meaningful experiences, using visual cues when useful, reading interactively, and checking for understanding.

Example in a Childcare Setting

A caregiver says, “Please put your cup on the table and bring your book to the rug.” The child’s response provides information about understanding the direction.
