Build Movement Into the Daily Schedule
Physical activity should not have to feel like formal exercise for young children. Running, dancing, jumping, climbing, playing ball, riding a bicycle, taking a family walk, or participating in active games can all encourage movement.
Try to make active play a predictable part of the day. Depending on the family’s schedule and the child’s age, this could mean outdoor play after daycare, a walk after dinner, dancing indoors on a rainy afternoon, or a trip to a local park.
Parents can also participate when possible. Children learn by observing adults, and seeing parents enjoy movement can help establish the idea that being active is simply a normal part of everyday life.
