Associative Play

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition: Associative play describes social play in which children interact, communicate, exchange materials, or show interest in one another’s activities while still largely pursuing their own individual play ideas.

It can be distinguished conceptually from parallel play, in which children play near one another with relatively limited interaction, and more organized cooperative play, in which children coordinate their activities around a shared purpose.

Associative Play: Definition & Importance in Childcare

Why Associative Play Matters in Childcare

Associative play can provide opportunities to practice communication, sharing materials, observing peers, expressing ideas, and entering social interactions.

Adults can support these experiences without requiring every play activity to become highly structured group play.

Example in a Childcare Setting

Several children sit at an art table. Each child creates a separate picture, but they talk about their drawings, exchange crayons, observe what others are doing, and comment on one another’s work.
