Language and Communication Development: This domain involves children’s developing abilities to understand and communicate information, needs, thoughts, and ideas. It includes receptive language—what children understand—as well as expressive communication through speech, gestures, signs, and other forms of communication. Reading aloud, singing, storytelling, conversation, and asking questions can help create a language-rich childcare environment. CDC milestone guidance includes language and communication as a distinct developmental category.
