Adaptive or Self-Help Development: Adaptive development concerns children’s increasing ability to participate in everyday routines and age-appropriate self-care activities, such as eating, dressing, toileting, washing hands, following routines, and taking increasing responsibility for simple tasks. Some developmental frameworks treat adaptive skills separately, while others incorporate them into physical, social-emotional, or other developmental areas.
