Definition: Emotional development is the process through which children increasingly experience, recognize, express, understand, and manage emotions while learning to respond to the emotions of other people.
It is closely connected with relationships, communication, self-regulation, social development, and children’s growing understanding of themselves.
Why Emotional Development Matters in Childcare
Childcare environments contain many emotional experiences: separation and reunion, excitement, frustration, waiting, sharing, success, disappointment, friendship, and conflict.
Responsive adults can help children identify emotions, communicate needs, develop coping strategies, and gradually manage emotional responses.
Example in a Childcare Setting
A child becomes frustrated when a block tower falls. The caregiver acknowledges the frustration and helps the child pause, calm down, and decide whether to rebuild or try something different.
